Understanding Executive Functioning

Executive functioning is a set of cognitive skills that help us regulate our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. When these skills are impaired, it can lead to difficulties with organization, time management, and completing tasks.

Strategies and Tools to Support Organization

Here are five practical tips to help your child stay organized:

Create a Visual Schedule: Use a calendar, whiteboard, or app to help your child visualize their daily routine. This can make it easier to see what needs to be done and when.

Establish Routines: Consistent routines can help your child develop a sense of predictability and reduce stress. Create routines for morning and evening tasks, as well as homework time.

Use Organizational Tools: Consider using tools like planners, checklists, and color-coded folders to help your child stay on top of their assignments and belongings.

Break Tasks Down: Large tasks can be overwhelming. Help your child break down big projects into smaller, more manageable steps.

Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness techniques can help improve focus and reduce anxiety, which can be beneficial for children who struggle with organization.
