Time Management Tips for Kids: A Guide for Parents and Teachers

Understanding the Challenge

Is your kid always running late, struggling to complete assignments on time, or forgetting important dates? These difficulties might stem from a lack of time management skills, a common executive functioning deficit. Executive functions are cognitive processes that help us plan, organize, and prioritize tasks.

AND... when we remember that executive functioning skills have to be taught (they're not automatic!), we can approach our kid's time management journey with kindness and grace!

Strategies and Tools to Help

While a lack of time management can be frustrating, there are effective strategies and tools to support your kid's development. Here are five ideas to get you started:

Visual Schedules: Create a visual schedule using a calendar, whiteboard, or app. This helps kids visualize their day, understand their responsibilities, and stay on track.

Time Management Tools: Explore time management apps or tools designed for kids. These can include timers, checklists, and task trackers.

Break Down Big Tasks: Large projects can feel overwhelming. Encourage your kid to break down big tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. This will make them feel less intimidated and help them stay focused.

Prioritize Tasks: Teach your kid to prioritize tasks based on importance and deadlines. This helps them understand which tasks need immediate attention.

Practice Time Management Skills: Incorporate time management activities into daily routines. For example, set a timer for specific tasks or practice planning a day's activities together.
